BREIF:

A fully animated 2D music video for Miss June’s ‘PPD,’ following a protagonist stuck in unhealthy patterns, seeking a way to separate herself from the traumas of her past, which are personified as a shadow, before ultimately coming to the realisation she must make peace with her past instead of escape it. Funded by NZ on Air.

The Process

Based on the client’s initial brief, I developed a pitch deck of storyline option and complimentary visual references.

After client feedback, I developed a finalised shot-by-shot descriptive plan which I converted into a storyboard, and developed character design iterations.

I created a complete animatic to visualise the final animation and anticipate timing beats, set to the song.

I split the production into chunks. For each, I methodically developed roughs, keyframes, inbetweens and then colour, checking in with the client between stages.

I created a preliminary complete draft and edit based on client feedback. In this case we added additional chunk of unique animation to reduce the length of repeated montage.
